The National Instruments NI PXIe-1062Q is a high-performance eight-slot 3U PXI Express instrument chassis designed for automated measurement, data acquisition, electronic test, signal generation, RF testing, and control applications. It combines PXI Express bandwidth with support for selected legacy PXI and CompactPCI modules, allowing system integrators to build flexible mixed-generation instrumentation systems.
The chassis includes one PXI Express system controller slot, two PXI Express hybrid peripheral slots, one PXI Express system timing slot, and four PXI peripheral slots. Its hybrid architecture supports compatible PXI Express, CompactPCI Express, PXI, and CompactPCI modules according to the capabilities of each slot.
The NI PXIe-1062Q provides up to 1 GB/s of dedicated single-direction bandwidth to each PXI Express slot through x4 PCI Express links. It also supplies low-jitter 10 MHz and 100 MHz reference clocks, PXI trigger lines, PXI Star and PXI Express differential star connections, local bus resources, rear-panel reference clock connections, and a system timing slot for synchronization within single-chassis and multichassis installations.
The NI PXIe-1062Q provides practical value for engineers and system integrators who require a compact, synchronized, and expandable modular instrumentation platform.
Slot 1 is the four-link PXI Express system controller slot. The chassis includes three expansion positions to the left of Slot 1, allowing a compatible multislotted embedded controller to expand without occupying the peripheral module positions.
Slots 3 and 5 are hybrid peripheral slots. Each hybrid position can accept a compatible PXI Express peripheral with an x4 or x1 PCI Express link, a CompactPCI Express Type-2 peripheral, a hybrid-compatible PXI module, or a 32-bit CompactPCI peripheral.
Slot 4 is the PXI Express system timing slot. It accepts compatible PXI Express system timing modules, PXI Express peripherals, and CompactPCI Express Type-2 peripherals. Slots 2, 6, 7, and 8 are PXI peripheral slots for compatible PXI or CompactPCI modules operating through the chassis’s 32-bit, 33 MHz PCI bus.
The NI PXIe-1062Q routes x4 PCI Express links from the system controller position to Slots 3, 4, and 5. Each PXI Express slot supports up to 1 GB/s of dedicated single-direction bandwidth under the applicable system configuration.
A backplane PCI Express-to-PCI translation bridge provides a 32-bit, 33 MHz PCI bus to Slots 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8. This arrangement allows supported legacy PXI and CompactPCI modules to operate alongside PXI Express hardware.
Actual system throughput depends on the embedded controller, installed modules, PCI Express generation, driver software, application architecture, data-transfer method, and total system configuration.
The system timing slot in Slot 4 supports dedicated timing resources for precise clocking, triggering, and synchronization. PXIe_DSTAR differential pairs connect the timing slot with the hybrid peripheral positions, while single-ended PXI Star connections are routed to compatible slots.
The PXI Express differential star connections provide a maximum slot-to-slot skew of 150 ps and maximum differential skew of 25 ps. The single-ended PXI Star trigger provides a maximum slot-to-slot skew of 250 ps.
Eight PXI trigger lines are shared among the applicable slots. These trigger resources allow compatible instruments to coordinate acquisition, signal generation, switching, and control operations.
The PXIe-1062Q distributes PXI_CLK10 independently to each peripheral slot. The 10 MHz reference clock has a specified maximum slot-to-slot skew of 250 ps, accuracy of ±25 ppm, and maximum phase jitter of 5 ps RMS over the documented measurement range.
PXIe_CLK100 and PXIe_SYNC100 are distributed to the hybrid peripheral slots and system timing slot. These 100 MHz reference signals provide a maximum slot-to-slot skew of 100 ps and specified accuracy of ±25 ppm.
An external 10 MHz reference can be supplied through the rear-panel BNC input or the PXI_CLK10_IN connection in the system timing slot. When a valid external reference is detected, the chassis phase-locks PXI_CLK10, PXIe_CLK100, and PXIe_SYNC100 to that source.
A copy of the chassis reference clock is available through the rear-panel 10 MHz REF OUT BNC connector. These input and output connections support synchronization of compatible instruments across multiple chassis.
The NI PXIe-1062Q provides a maximum total output power of 353.6 W. The combined power available from the +3.3 V, +5 V, and +12 V rails is limited to 345 W.
Maximum chassis current capacities are 26 A at +3.3 V, 27 A at +5 V, 19 A at +12 V, 1.5 A at -12 V, and 1.5 A on the 5 V auxiliary supply.
The maximum power dissipated in the system controller position is 140 W. Each peripheral slot supports up to 30 W of power dissipation and cooling. The total requirements of the controller and all peripheral modules must remain within the chassis rail, slot, and total-power limits.
The PXIe-1062Q uses positive-pressure forced-air cooling through two 110 cfm fans. Air enters through the lower rear of the chassis and is directed from the bottom toward the top of the installed modules. Exhaust air exits along the chassis sides and top.
The rear fan selector provides High and Auto settings. High mode delivers maximum cooling performance. Auto mode adjusts fan speed according to the temperature of the air entering the rear intake and reduces acoustic emissions when full fan speed is not required.
At ambient temperatures up to approximately 30 °C, the documented sound pressure level in Auto mode is 43.6 dBA. High mode has a documented sound pressure level of 62 dBA.
Filler panels should be installed in unused positions to maintain correct airflow. Optional slot blockers can further improve cooling performance when not all slots are occupied.
The front power inhibit switch includes an LED that communicates chassis status. A steady green indication identifies normal powered operation. Flashing green indicates that the intake temperature has exceeded the supported range.
A flashing red indication identifies power supply outputs that are outside voltage-regulation requirements. A steady red indication identifies failure of a chassis fan or the power supply fan. If both system fans or the power supply fan fail, the chassis shuts down automatically to reduce the risk of thermal damage.
The rear DB-9 connector provides monitoring access to the +3.3 V, +5 V, +12 V, and -12 V supply rails. This connector is intended for voltage verification and inhibit control, not for supplying power to external devices.
The rear-panel Inhibit Mode selector provides Default and Manual control modes. Default mode allows a compatible PXI Express system controller to control the power supply through the backplane.
Manual mode allows the chassis to power on without a system controller installed. In this mode, grounding the active-low inhibit input on the rear DB-9 connector places the chassis in standby. Removing the ground connection powers the chassis on again.
The NI PXIe-1062Q has an integrated carrying handle and removable feet for benchtop use. Optional front and rear rack-mount kits support installation in an instrument cabinet.
The primary exhaust area is at the top, while the principal filtered intake is at the rear. Adequate ventilation clearance must be maintained around the chassis to prevent thermal faults.
The documented minimum clearance is approximately 3 inches, or 76.2 mm, behind the chassis and 1.75 inches, or 44.45 mm, along the relevant side and upper areas.

The NI PXIe-1062Q is a chassis and does not provide independent measurement functionality without a compatible system controller and application-specific peripheral modules. Buyers should confirm whether the individual unit includes an embedded controller, data acquisition cards, digitizers, RF instruments, switching modules, timing modules, or other hardware.
Not every slot accepts every module type. PXI Express modules should be installed only in compatible PXI Express hybrid or system timing positions. Conventional PXI and CompactPCI modules must be matched to the supported legacy peripheral or hybrid slots.
The installed controller, operating system, PXI Platform Services version, Measurement & Automation Explorer configuration, module drivers, and application software must be mutually compatible. Legacy controllers and modules may require archived software or specific operating system versions.
The NI PXIe-1062Q receives comprehensive functional and performance testing before shipment. Testing may include power-up, power inhibit switch operation, status LED indications, system controller slot operation, hybrid slot recognition, system timing slot operation, PXI peripheral slot connectivity, and verification of the primary backplane voltage rails.
Additional checks may include PCI Express communication, legacy PCI bus operation, PXI trigger routing, 10 MHz and 100 MHz reference clock distribution, rear reference input and output, remote inhibit control, voltage monitoring, fan operation, automatic fan control, and power supply status monitoring.
The chassis may also be inspected for damaged backplane connectors, bent card guides, worn injector or ejector rails, missing filler panels, restricted ventilation, contaminated air filters, fan noise, loose handles, damaged feet, and power supply shuttle condition.
The exact testing scope depends on available controllers, timing modules, PXI Express instruments, PXI peripherals, software, and reference measurement equipment.
Buyers should confirm whether the NI PXIe-1062Q is supplied as an empty chassis or includes a controller and peripheral modules. The presence of eight physical slots does not indicate that any controller or instrumentation cards are included.
The condition of the backplane connectors, card guides, hybrid slots, system timing slot, cooling fans, air filters, power supply shuttle, circuit breaker, reference clock BNC connectors, DB-9 monitoring interface, carrying handle, feet, and rack-mount points should be reviewed.
Only the chassis, embedded controller, peripheral modules, filler panels, slot blockers, power cable, rack hardware, software, documentation, and accessories specifically identified in the individual product listing should be considered included.
